Brooks は “July の jumping salmon” だけでは終わらない
ADF&G の Brooks Camp explanation は beautiful で、 July の upstream-migrating fish だけでなく、 September の spawned-out salmon provide easy pickings と説明しています。 つまり season には二つの mood がある。
July は athletic, airborne, competitive。 September は slower, scavenging-friendly, end-of-run abundance。 同じ場所でも、salmon condition が変わると bears の feeding atmosphere まで変わって見えます。
McNeil River は、集まる brown bears の数そのものが legend になる場所
ADF&G は McNeil River を the largest known gathering of brown bears in the world と説明しています。 Early July には chum salmon が returning し、 cascading rapids and pools が their progress を遅らせるため、 hungry bears にとって easy prey になります。 Peak late July には as many as 74 bruins at the falls とまで言われる。
